Water from a Cliff, Sixt Fer a Cheval

Medium format, taken with a 300 mm lens. A strong waterfall comes from a hole in the middle of a cliff that is perhaps 500 feet high in the Sixt Fer a Cheval valley, a couple of valleys north of Chamonix. Full of trails along the valley and over the ridges, this area offers hiking to all abilities. Taken on Ilford FP4+ film. MF-060705-04

Medium format, taken with a 300mm lens on July 14, 2006, in Yvoire, France. Yvoire, a small village on Lake Geneva, was founded in 1306 and this device, perhaps installed in the early 20th century, lifted hay into the Baron's barn. Taken on Ilford FP4+ film. M070602-12

Taken just as the sun hit in morning, this very old and oft patched barn sits on the edge of the small village of Excenevex on the southern shore of Lake Geneva. As the shore is developed, what was once farmland has become housing and this farm is being squeezed hard. Taken on Ilford FP4+ film. MF-070607-04

Medium format, taken with a 150 mm lens. An early morning shot of a watering trough with its constantly running pipe across the narrow street from the Baron’s barn, now used to slake the thirst of tourists or as an occasional swimming pool for a local dog. Taken on Ilford FP4+ film. MF-060707-02

Massive mountains shot from the road over the Stelvio Pass (Passo dello Stelvio) in the Italian Alps. If you look just past the trees on the left at the shoulder of the mountain justwhere the tree line meets the rock you can see a multistory climber's hut to give you a sense of scale. Aosta is in the northwest corner of Italy and the nearby autostrada leads to the Tunnel du Mont Blanc and Chamonix. With a first century bridge you can walk across, Roman ruins running through the town, and damage still visible from World War II, Aosta is a very old city full of history. Taken on June 27, 2013.

Yvoire is a small medieval village set on a point between the Petit Lac and the Grand Lac on the southern shore of Lake Geneva. This is the Baron's castle, still inhabited by a Baron with the sunset reflected in the the windows on the west side of the castle. Shot on June 15, 2013.

On the road from Martigny, Switzerland, to Aosta, Italy, over the Col du Grand St. Bernard one is surprised by this tropical-looking waterfall next to the road. Shot on June 27, 2013, at 56mm at f/27 for 6 seconds.

Three Swans in the Bol D'or Mirabaud

The Bol D'or Mirabaud is sailboat race from Geneva, Switzerland, to the other end of Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) and back, at total of around 150 miles. The fastest high-tech boats finish in around 12 hours and the smaller ones may take 24 hours or more. These three boats, matched by swans, were still competing hard in a very light wind on the morning after the race started on June 15, 2013.

Typical of the fishing boats that have been used for generations on Lake Geneva (Lac Leman), this wooden boat was enjoying a morning off at Roveree, near Yvoire on the southern shore of the lake. Taken on June 15, 2013.

Looking Down From the Stelvio Pass, Italy

O. K., so this is a bit of a tourist shot... Voted the World's Best Driving Road In The World by the BBC's Top Gear, the road over the Stelvio Pass (Passo dello Stelvio) a couple of hours west of Balzano, Italy, is steep, dramatic, and gorgeous. Note that the mountainside is so steep some switchbacks are perched on walls built out from the hillside! Cars, motorcycles, campers, and bicycles all share this climb. Shot on June 18, 2013.
